"Brick & Soul" at the History Colorado Center (2021-22)
“As I was thinking about a title for Brick & Soul, and its connection to the Building Denver exhibit, I wanted to tie it in with the term brick and mortar. The way people interact with physical locations has a lot to do with our soul. Many of these places are where people live and die, and where they celebrate and mourn. Families are raised in these neighborhoods, passing traditions down to the generations that will come long after they’re gone. Bricks harken to the past, and embody a time that so many folks in Denver are fighting to keep from losing.
So much of my Denver photography shows how people interact with the city, and how they bring life to lifeless buildings. The streets serve as the background to so many of my subjects because that’s where I meet many of them. The streets are where they cruise and where they fight for justice and equality, sometimes both at the same time. This exhibit is an ode to the people who have built this city with brick and soul.”
